Fnn's fantasy : for viola and ensemble, opus 49 / Marijn Simons, 2008
Description:
Fnn's Fantasy is composed for my friend and colleague Andrew Simpson (Principal Violist of the Aachen Symphony Orchestra).
The instrumentation is quite similar in style to Paul Hindemith's Chamber Music Nos. 1-7. Hindemith gave the term "chamber music" a broader meaning. His series of works are for rather big ensembles which need to be conducted, the chamber music element being represented through the virtuosity, contrapuntal structure and interaction between the instruments.
Hindemith was also an excellent violist. I think that explains why in my work for solo viola and ensemble I created a link with him through the instrumentation.
Fnn's Fantasy is a real fantasy piece (Fantasiestück). It's around 10 minutes long, it has lots of ideas in it and it was composed very impulsively. In the music I tried to keep a sketch-like character, which I think strongly belongs to a fantasy piece. - Marijn Simons
