Divining Apollo : for violoncello and ensemble / Vanessa Lann
Other authors:

(Composer)
Description:
Program note (English): As in many of the works of Vanessa Lann, Divining Apollo deals with Time and Memory and the manner in which we listen. Almost all of the cellist's material involves repeated, recognizable gestures based on the overtones of the open strings of the instrument. However, due to the more aggressive and prominent patterns of the other players, as well as certain visual cues and unconventional seat positioning in the first half of the piece, the cellist initially appears to be playing accompanimental background colours, rather than solo material. Only after hearing the whole piece does the listener realize that the cellist's music at the beginning is actually the same as his music at the end, and that he has been playing the simple, but powerful, main melody of the piece all along. In the same way that the Greek god Apollo could divine, or predict, the future, the cellist's quiet, yet persistent, opening music proves to be the key to understanding the larger meaning, and form, of the work as a whole. - VANESSA LANN
