Description:
Program note (English): According to Webster's College Dictionary, 'Crosscurrents' means: 1. a current, as in a stream, moving across the main current, 2. a conflicting tendency or movement. Almost anyone who has looked at a body of water will have noticed that under the most obvious streaming motion, there is often a second and sometimes third layer of movement perceptible. These different streams usually move in opposing directions, and as a whole they represent an intriguing spectacle. This is a picture I had in mind when I thought of the typical characteristics of the organ: an instrument which is particularly suited to translate a high degree of layering into sound. In Crosscurrents, this layering is achieved by combining a slow or broad type of movement with a rapid toccata-like one, in the closing 10 measures of the work, the broader movement triumphs over the more rapid one. - WIM DE RUITER
