L' espoir : pour quatuor de saxophones, opus 30, 2005 / Marijn Simons
Description:
Program note (English): My previous work for saxophone quartet, Rocking Birds, is a work in which the saxophones are used for the things they are best at: rock and jazz influenced music. At least, that's what I thought. After having heard more concerts and recordings of the Amstel Saxophone Quartet I realized that the saxophone also has an exquisite soft and lyrical side. In L'espoir I wanted to use both sides of the saxophone: the soft and lyrical side and the loud and agressive side. L'espoir is a painting by Joan Miró. It has a background from which figures appear. These figures are often very playful. In the music - which develops from a soft, single note - this can be heard in the playful and jazzy second section. - MARIJN SIMONS
