Description:
Program note (English): I wrote the brief chronicle for organ De zonne rijst (...) [The sun is rising] forty years ago for the beautiful Delhaye-organ (1770, burnt down in 1972) in the Bergen op Zoom St. Gertrud Church. For many a long year I have loved and admired poetry by the Flemish priest-poet Guido Gezelle (1830-1899). Although De zonne rijst is a composition in its own right, I had in mind, as I wrote it the sound and timbre of Gezelle's work. I would strongly suggest to have the text by Gezelle recited prior to the relevant parts being played. Even if De zonne rijst was composed as a continuing suite, its parts may perfectly well be performed separately. In this way, a suite could originate to the musician's own discretion. In turn, part VIII (Aleer het licht) [Before the light] may already exemplify so autonomous as composition. - DAAN MANNEKE
