Description:
Program note (English): Dura Lex (By the law), based upon 'The unexpected' by Jack London, is a stylistically sophisticated and razor-sharp psychological drama directed by one of the Soviet avant-garde's most influential figures: Lev Kuleshov. While searching for gold in the Yukon, a disgruntled prospector (Vladimir Fogel) viciously murders two of his fellow shareholders, and the surviving members (Sergei Komarov and Alexandra Khoklova), after committing the dead to the frozen earth, must decide the fate of their deranged cohort. Kuleshov's use of montage synthesizes wondrously with Jack London's brutal fable of minds twisted by cabin fever, seething with greed, besieged by the unmerciful elements of the bitter Alaskan wilderness. - JAN BUS
