Description:
Program note (English): The idea for 'In Paradisum' presented itself when the Asko Ensemble commissioned the work for a performance in 'the Proms' in Paradiso, Amsterdam. Paradiso is a converted church in the heart of Amsterdam and a popular venue for all sorts of events, notably pop and rock concerts. But it is also Asko's favourite concert venue because of its wonderful acoustics, its size and location. A special feature of Paradiso is the balconies along three sides of the hall, embracing the stage at the open end of their horseshoe layout. I wanted to use these for spatial effects and designed an arrangement offering a variety of possibilities for the movement of sound in various directions and groupings. - JAN VRIEND
