Bella Figura is based on the use of four open strings that are played in all possible combinations of large double stops alternating with subtile tone-quarter fluctuations. It is a game of extremes, of different color possibilities of the cello. Many playing techniques are must be used; from very "sul ponticello" to very loud scratches. The work is a research on tone and bowing; a work about the cello, the bella figura. - Willem Jeths
