General: Willem Boogman was born in 1955 and grew up near the IJssel river (Netherlands).

Education: Willem Boogman studied Philosophy at the University of Utrecht (1974-1975). He started study in composition at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague (Peter Schat, Louis Andriessen) and completed it with Ton de Leeuw at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam in 1983.

Compositions: His compositions are impressed by Stockhausen’s theoretical work and Varèse’s music. Ways to be found in the fundamentals of music, – and Mondrian. He composes from ideas that are in direct relation with the current life. The sound of the stars (Sternenrest), the hours of a day (Day Daily - The Hours), dance (Raving), the eternal joy of love (Canto gioiosamente / Liefde een woning): these are all themes that play a rol in the life of today. In his most abstract music he is searching for clues to the listener, and in his most accessible music he plays with the unknown.

Willem composes orchestral music (Radio Filharmonisch Orkest), chamber music (Asko Ensemble, Slagwerk Den Haag, Spectra Ensemble), choral music (Nederlands Kamerkoor), incidental music (Toneelgroep Warns), music theatre (with the director Sandra Macrander) and music for small ensembles (songs, solo music).

The Netherlands Radio Philharmonisch Orchestra conducted by Reinbert de Leeuw premiered Raving for orchestra and Electronic Dance Pulse, on 01/02/2014 during the ZaterdagMatinee in the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. The performance was broadcast by the Dutch Radio. This was Willems first orchestral work.

His three most recents works include ‘Passacaglia for flute’ (for flute solo), ‘Genieting VI’ (for piccolo solo) and ‘Nous le chant III’ (for mixed choir, accordion, organ and samples). These are all publishes by Donemus, in the year 2015.

Other activities: Willem was from 1989 to 1999 member of the Rudolf Escher Committee.

Since 2003, he is the artistic director of the Asko Kamerkoor [Asko Chamber Choir].

He also participated from 1980 to 1984 in the Asko Ensemble’s Workshop Project, a collaboration between instrumentalists and composers: ›real‹ school. Through this project, he got to know music in its broadest range, from the inside and from the outside.

Willem has also written several articles, for example on Escher’s choral music, on Genieting and La discipline dei sentimenti, and on modernism in music.

Van 1980 tot 1984 deelgenomen aan het Werkplaatsproject (een samenwerkingsverband van instrumentalisten en componisten) van het Asko Ensemble: leerschool. De muziek leren kennen in haar meest grote reikwijdte, van binnen en van buiten.
Onder de indruk van het theoretische werk van Stockhausen en de muziek van Varèse. Wegen die gevonden worden in het elementaire van muziek, – en Mondriaan.
Van 1989 tot 1999 lid van het Rudolf Escher Comité.
