composition
Ripple volts : for saxophone quartet, 2000 / Christina Viola Oorebeek
Description:
Program note (English): A short melody of four notes mirrored in the soprano and tenor saxophone is the starting point of Ripple Volts. As the piece progresses, the musical lines shoot upwards and downwards and become longer and more unpredictable. Sometimes they burst away from each other and a moment of rest is created. At the climax of tension in the piece, the call of a bird from the Sumatran jungle is heard in a chromatic line of four notes. In the last section of Ripple Volts, the now curvy, rippling melodic lines are played by all four instruments and then the piece is ended in a descent towards the low and dark registers of the saxophone quartet, ultimately, nothing is heard but the breath of the players. - CHRISTINA VIOLA OOREBEEK
