... en souvenir de Shalimar' : for 5 saxophones and 5 string instruments, 1997 / Christina Viola Oorebeek
Description:
Program note (English): The idea of 'sculpted sound' occupied me while writing the piece, trying to create a sound that expands and rotates like a kind of aural hologram. The strings and saxophones mix and blend in various ways to achieve this effect. Dynamics are of great importance in this interplay between the two instrumental groups, so that their timbres can create a melded sound. The piece is based on a mirrored modus spreading fanlike outward from e' and f''. The form is inspired by the 'alap', the introductory form of an Indian raga, in which the notes of the modus are slowly introduced through fragments of the melodic material. The complete melodic theme is not heard until the soprano saxophone solo, in the last third of the piece. "...en souvenir de Shalimar' - worn images mirrored in broken bits of mosaic, the emptying fountain in the Moghul gardens of Shalimar". - CHRISTINA VIOLA OOREBEEK
