Concerto for cello and chamber orchestra : 1996, revision 2003 / Srđan Dedić

Description:
Program note (English): (Première: April 6, 1997 - Music Biennale Zagreb - Walter Despalj, Prague Symphony Orchestra) The composition consists of a single movement with nine large sections. It reflects my view of the cello as a powerful, rather than a lyric, solo instrument. The orchestra participates proportionally to the solo instrument, often with rich textures and virtuoso parts. The mainly spontaneously created theme of the piece is further developed and extended using computer and software MAX (developed at IRCAM, Paris). Some of the algorithmic composition methods I used are: - organizing pitches by drawing them from the continuously changing complex modes and arrays; - creation of a counter subject on pre-defined parameters; - manipulation with a time-order of defined melodic-rhythmical patterns; - applying computer generated combination and probability distributions of the process of making a choice in rhythmic values, vertical and horizontal intervals and motives. I tried to synthesize
rational and (for me) sophisticated composing techniques, with spontaneous and spirited musical ideas. The composition was selected by the ISCM Jury for the World Music Days 1997 in Seoul. - SRDAN DEDIC
