Chain : for wind orchestra, 1995, revision 1997 / Ron Ford
Description:
Program note (English): Chain it is best described as a line of music fragments. A train with seven short music-bits pas quickly by a station. They are sometimes related to each other, other times in contrast to each other, but in the end add up to chain of connections, which in turn add up to a strange but coherent musical story. This is exactly what the composer was looking for in writing the work. I want to be compellingly pulled along by music to places I do not yet know. I 'm looking for musical movement that takes the listener with it, and while his stream of music often includes surprising turns and disruptions, they never upset the internal flow of the movement. In this piece, the listener's musical memory is tested, in that the musical blocks are both fast and short, before one is accustomed to the one music, they are pushed into the next. The balance between this unrestful use of musical material and constant rhythmic feeling of moving forward, makes Chain a train moving so fast that it
threatens to jump out of its tracks. - RON FORD
