String quartet no. 4 : 1990 / James Fulkerson
Description:
Program note (English): The work is composed in three movements which are performed with a slight pause between each of them. All movements are either fast or very fast. In particular, movement three sounds as if it is being improvised - although it is fully notated, while movement two applies a reductive process to music initially heard in movement one. While I believe that I am working within the 'tradition' of classical European art music, I am aware that for more than a decade there has been a convergence between classical music and popular music to the point where it is hard to identify where one crosses the line into one area or the other. Consequently, I expect my listener to be familiar with a number of works such as the Beatles' use of the string quartet, John Zorn's 'Forbidden Fruit', Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention's use of collage technique, etc. - JAMES FULKERSON
