Program note (English): (Premiere: 9-5-1971 - Zagreb - Soloist of Zagreb).The deep silence, which envelops the music from start to finish, is like the tranquillity of some vast surface - deceptive! Beneath the surface a great boiling and bubbling goes on all the time: there are sudden eruptions - large and small - which come and go. The tension, however, never reaches an explosion. The silence is maintained throughout. The music seeks an equilibrium in between the two rival forces.
All this is demanding on the players. The smallest details must be weighed meticulously, with a concentration, intensity and nuancing which one would sooner expect in chamber music. - TON DE LEEUW
