Sonate no. 2 : violoncello solo, 1951 / Henk Badings
Description:
Program note (English): The sections of this sonata merge into one another virtually without a break. The arrangement of these sections may be described as follows: 1) an Allegro, consisting of a sonata exposition and development, while in place of the recapitulation there are 2) an intermezzo (Moderato) and 3) a slow movement (Grave), after which 4) a Presto brings the work to a conclusion. The exposition contains two themes: the main theme which itself consists of two contrasting motifs and after a transition section, which contains apart from a development of the material of the main theme an anticipation of what is to follow, the exuberant second theme. The theme of the intermezzo results from a transformation of this theme. The Grave, in common with the main theme, has two contrasting elements. At the close of the Grave there is a reminiscence of the motif of the intermezzo on the low strings, but a galloping passage evolves from this, which develops from a relationship to the development episode
to a playful finale theme. - HENK BADINGS
