Description:
Program note (English): The work was originally written for oboe and string quartet in 1937; this arrangement was made in 1940.
In part 1, Ciaconna, the oboe exposes the eight-bar theme, with a simple orchestral accompaniment. This is followed by eight variations, each shedding a new light on the theme. Alternately, the oboe and the string orchestra predominate. This first movement climaxes in the eighth variation, where in maestoso tempo the oboe plays the original theme, with the violins adorning it in broadly bowed chords.
The second part, Adagio non troppo, is in three part song form: A - B - A. In the middle section B: Allegro vivace, some canonic passages occur between oboe and solo violin, and between oboe and solo viola.
The third movement, Allegro moderato ma deciso, written in a simple, free rondo form, is constructed on two short motifs. The first is played immediate by the second violins, and it is followed by the playful second motif. - HERMAN STRATEGIER
