Les adieux : for piano / Ton de Leeuw, 1988
Description:
Program note (English): 'Les Adieux', an extensive one-movement work for piano, was written in 1988 as the result of a commission by the Amsterdam Arts Fund.
It is a sequel to the group of works, written since approx. 1980, in so-called "widened modality".
The work opens with a short, nearly declamatoric introduction, after which the profile of the work's musical universe is outlined. What follows is a broad, tranquilly breathing movement, with a central two-tone motif that - in some form or the other - remains present in the background. The surrounding music is subject to continuous transformations, without ever overstepping its bounds. - TON DE LEEUW
