(Composer)
Description:
Program note (English): Catur (should be pronounced as 'Chatur', as in 'ch' from children) is the Sanskrit word for the number four. This is chosen because of the four players and the four movements in this piece, in which each movement is subdivided in four small parts. Each part is based on a combination of two different numbers with the characters to which they belong according to the science of numerology. For example: number one symbolizes the arise, number seven the introspection. The numbers are additionally used in a structural way. The total form consists of a chain of small units which overflow in one another. The pitch is based on symmetrical modes. In this composition you can find influences of Balinese gamelan: the existing patterns from the Balinese gamelan; the use of heterophony where there are layers with a distinct cantus firmus (balungan), rhythmical ornaments and gong function; the use of the principle of hoketes and interlocking patterns; the bright and vivid character of the
Balinese gamelan and the technique of gradually changing of tempi and rhythms. - SINTA WULLUR
