Description:
Program note (English): Wals is not a waltz, but the work is based upon the same rhythmic tension between double and triple time which is characteristic of the Viennese waltz. Although Wals is almost entirely 2/4, the rudiments of a waltz can be perceived here and there and with increasing distinctness towards the end. The culmination of this process is that the last two bars are written in 3/4 after all: "Tempo di Valse". Thus the development is the reverse of that of "La Valse" by Ravel, where the waltz breaks off in the last two bars. The second principal element is a three-part canon with the parts played in hocket style. In overall terms this hocket technique becomes increasingly complex as the work progresses, until shortly before the end total fragmentation is achieved. - GEERT VAN KEULEN
