Scherzo no. 2 : per orchestra, opus 38, 1956-'57 / Léon Orthel

Description:
Program note (English): (Première: 12-3-1957 - The Brabant Orchestra) - When one looks up 'scherzo' in Boumans' Foreign words in music (in the version by prof. Dr K. Ph. Bernet Kempers), the book gives the following explanation: rhythmical, piquant piece of music that is useful for a large diversity of moods. By nature lively and farcical, it can also be dark and ominous - with a slight inclination to charge - often also fantastic. For the average concert audience it should not be difficult to determine that scherzo is under no circumstances a happy phenomenon. It is, on the contrary a darkly coloured piece, to a certain degree. That it is a mixed form, written as a passage between the composed song form and larger rondo form, will be of interest to only a few. Perhaps it is more appropriate to say, that during my work on this scherzo the spirit of Jeroen Bosch came into view (that was, as a matter of fact, more so when writing my first symphony). I want to by no means give the impression of trying
to make a Bosch painting sound in music. However, it is still a name, in this lively scherzo. - LÉON ORTHEL
