Treurmuziek : voor orkest, 1948 / Ton de Leeuw
Description:
Program note (English): The treurmuziek (funeral music) by Ton de Leeuw is written in variation form. The ''theme, which can better be called a complexity of motifs and melodic data, relies entirely on the organ point 'a'. The small second-motifs heard in the first measures both rise (e - f) and descend (b flat - a), are an important core motif. The motifs grow in rich variations with an adjoining bassoon melody which appears. Variation 1 is a trio for flute, oboe and clarinet; variations 2 and 3 are short intermezzi respectively for string orchestra and for clarinet, horns, trombone and basses; in variation 4 alternating melodies in flute and bassoon are accompanied by the strings; in variation 5 brass instruments and the high wind instruments come to the forefront, a fast tempo is here for the first time prescribed in contrast to the previous variations; in the 6th variation (again andante con moto) more and more instruments join in and form the passage to violently moved 7th variation (allegro deciso); variation 8 is another adagio. In the two last variations the composer indicates and ad libitum. The 9th is a fugue on a theme which has been clearly inferred from variation 7; the 10th variation is a short lento, which reverts to an epilogue of the mourning atmosphere of the beginning. - TON DE LEEUW
