Description:
Program note (English): 'A short symphony' was the description of the commission. The result of this is a highly contrasting composition in four movements. The dynamic propulation is suddenly curbed in the first movement with its terse main theme by a stable, introvert image, after which the stirring movement again asserts itself. The Passacaglia with its strongly contrasting variations has as its background a twelve-tone bass figure, the second half of which forms the inversion of the first. The third movement is a lively, light-footed Scherzo with a sharp, humorous Trio in duple time. The Finale is characterised by a high degree of movement - initially by lively triplet passages and a little later in conjunction with a virile theme in the violins. After a development, there is an abrupt reaction from the brass and timpani. There follows a gradually built up energetic episode with a second motif related to that of the Passacaglia. After a transition, a short misterioso atmosphere suddenly occurs,
after which various motifs are combined simultaneously in the final phase. The main subject of the symphony is also intoned. - OSCAR VAN HEMEL
