Description:
Program note (English): The third Symphony was composed in 1934. The Dutch Music Festival of 1935, held to mark the occasion of Willem Mengelberg's forty years of conductorship of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, saw the first performance. The work, which was dedicated to Mengelberg, is in four movements. It opens with a dramatic Allegro, introduced martially by the brass. The Scherzo which follows, is in the form of a double fugue. The elegiac Adagio contrasts pleasantly with the liveliness od the Scherzo, and the Finale returns to the dramatics of the first movement.
