Ricercare : orchestra, (1949) / Hendrik Andriessen
Description:
Program note (English): [Première: 25 January 1950 - Residentie Orkest o.l.v. Willem van Otterloo] - The original 16th century ricerare was in fact a vocal form without words. Instrumental music searched therein a sort of independence, the contents were therefore a musical evocation. This Ricerare is also a recollection of several themes, which are 'apparently' mutually contradictory, but due to their contrast and by their contrapuntal dialogue an entire symphonic form is realized. These themes are shaped by the notes b, a, c, h. There is however no relation of this 'Ricercare' to the ancient motet character. - HENDRIK ANDRIESSEN
