Description:
Program note (English): The thematic structure of this Divertimento, which dates from 1946, is as unassuming as its title. The key-motive is an ascending series of three tones (g-a-b), which in the first beats of the 'Overture' is preceded by an octave interval. Together with its inversion this 'call' or 'germ' presents the building materials of the first part. The theme of the 'Pastoral' widens the first interval of the key-motive to a fourth (b-e-f sharp). In the contrasting episode of this first part, in the 'Musetta', the key-motive order returns; this time, however, in a minor key. In the 'Burlesca' the tone order is extended in minor thirds, while the 'Finale' shows it in many variants. It is finally restored in the original series in a fugato in a dancing 6/8 measure. - JAAP GERAEDTS
