composition
Ex Libris : for flute and piano / Michael Fine
Description:
Ex Libris began with the abrupt and nearly unprepared modulation that occurs near the end of the piece. I jotted it down in a notebook years ago - hence Ex Libris. I had been sorting through some old notebooks when the amazing flutist Stathis Karapanos asked me if I had a piece he could perform at an upcoming festival. I had his sound in mind ever since I produced his recording of the Khachaturian Flute Concerto. His sound and that old notebook jotting of a modulation was the impetus for this brief and, for me, nostalgic piece. It lies somewhere between a barcarolle and a lullaby.
