Description:
Program note (English): I have written my Divertimento for clarinet and piano on request of my colleague Frank van den Berg. This request originated from his attending a performance of my Five songs. This is what I enjoy: people who ask for a composition for pure enthusiasm about one's music (which, as a matter of fact, is only possible through performances).
The piece has more or less the form of a sonata. The light-hearted, popular-kept final movement made me choose the title Divertimento.
Since the music is written in a familiar, tonal and extremely moderated 'dialect', there is in fact little to explain.
My object is a 'Dutch sounding' music. For me this means about the middle between Hindemith and Britten, which occurs to me to be a more natural idiom for the Dutch music than embroidering on Ravel, Messiaen etc. - For avant-gardists, who prefer to take up the trends developing all over the world, the above may be nonsense... - HENK VAN DER VLIET
