The composition describes different aspects of the mountain range in Champéry, Switzerland, ‘Les Dents du Midi’. It uses the country’s three principal languages: German, in Part 1, picturing the changing aspects of the mountains; French, in Part II, describing the waters flowing from them, giving life to all things; Italian, in Part III, describing the awe, veneration and fear of the people who live close to the mountains.
