composition
Ombrose e care selve : for voice quintet / William Knight; Text Giovanni Battista Guarini
Description:
Ombrose e care selve was written to fit into an Italian madrigal programme performed by the Windsor Consort. The programme, solely comprised of text from the play Il pastor fido by Giovanni Battista Guarini, included music by Monteverdi, Marenzio, and Gastoldi. This new composition was influenced by the style employed in these Italian madrigals, following the word stresses rather than the natural inclination to stress the beginning of each bar. The music allows the singers to manipulate tempo to emphasise emotion, just as you would with an Italian madrigal. There are intentionally no dynamics and the metronome mark is only a suggestion.
