Memories II : voor organ / Jan Welmers
Description:
The erratic nature of the piece is partly caused by the rapid alternation of contrasting moods.
Initially the music ‘brushes’ briefly with utterances of our time, in which intervals such as rising and falling minor seconds, and minor thirds, soon dominate. They allude to phrases from the Lutheran chorales "Nun komm' der Heiden Heiland", "O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden" and "Meine Seele erhebt den Herren". These phrases too are intended as ‘brushes’. The lines of the chorales are heard as cantus firmi. They occur within the erratically shaped curve and in several tranquil passages, where stylistic references are made to earlier periods.
