Antipode I : for harpsichord and soundtrack / Merijn Bisschops
Description:
Antipode brings out a side of the harpsichord that is not often heard.
The starting point for the composition is the combined action of the harpsichord in traditional tuning with recordings of the same instrument while it is being played detuned and prepared. The soundtrack, with minor editing by computer, is not in a supporting role, but a full-fledged opponent for the instrumentalist. ‘Antipode I’ is a rough piece with fragmentary extremes and a wild growth of unpolished sound material. Harpsichord and tape are involved in a confrontation with cautious exploring, unstable consensus, mean pinching, and aggressive punches.
Antipode I is part of the triptych ‘Antipode I, II or III’, which consists of three solo pieces for early instruments (harpsichord, viola d’amore and traverso) in combination with soundtrack. The three parts can be played in random order as a triptych or as separate solo pieces.
