composition
Effusion : for flute and piano / Brendan Faegre
Description:
Effusion began as an attempt to acoustically produce the indistinguishable mixture (fusion) of flute and piano timbres: flutter-tongue flute blends with a sizzle chain on the piano strings; muted piano echoes slap-tongue flute; air blown through the flute blurs into brushing of the low-register piano strings. Within this restricted set of possible sounds for the instruments, I then allowed myself to pour forth musical expression (effusion) and to develop the ideas which emerged. The musical parameters less affected by timbre—rhythm, phrasing, form—became the primary vehicles for expression.
