Novel Forces : for organ / Brendan Faegre
Description:
Novel Forces is a work originally composed for the 31-tone microtonal Fokker organ, premiered by Masato Suzuki in January 2014. Its goal is to breath contemporary life into the tonal structures of the late Baroque period through the new chords and scales available in the Fokker organ's unique temperament. Harmony provides the momentum behind the work, while various grooves and textures are used to explore the new tonal space.
A year after the premiere, I decided to make a version of the work for the more traditional 12-tone temperament. I went back to my harmonic sketches and translated those sequences of chords and scales into the new temperament. Just like translating a Borges short story from Spanish into English, certain linguistic subtleties were no doubt lost. But the essence of the work remains the same, and now Novel Forces can continue to live on in future performances on other organs.
