Description:
Although Andrea Gabrieli is known for his sacred music (penitential psalms, celebrational hymns, motets and masses) he also wrote many madrigals. Sixteen of these madrigals are subject to this collection, together with six madrigals by his nephew Giovanni (c.1554-1612). All of them for five voices.
The underlying collection was republished in Venice in 1589 by Angelo Gardano. It was dedicated to the Prince and bishop Ernesto dell’ Essente. In that time Giovanni Gabrieli was organist in the church of the Serenissima Signoria in Venice.
