Utopia : for four violas / Luc Brewaeys
Description:
"Utopia" is at the same time my hommage to a friend since years and ardent supporter of my music (Harry Halbreich) as my salute to all the excellent viola players on this planet who daily vitiate the numerous jokes existing about them. Such a title inevitably results into huge problems for the performers : the high level of technical difficulty of the work and especially its syncronization, since I'd like them to surround the audience. The piece gets started quite "slowly" but grows to torrids of notes (also towards extreme "altitudes") in varied ways of articulation. The last section is quite slow with more melodic elements and the work ends softly with harmonic sounds. A First (partial) Performance was given during the Ars Musica Festival in March 2004. We're still waiting for a complete première, but I think the music almost requests a second (and maybe even a third) movement yet to be composed.
