Description:
Chase is een kort orkestwerk dat oorspronkelijk geschreven werd voor een filmmuziekproject van het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest, waarbij componisten gevraagd werd nieuwe muziek te componeren bij een bestaande spannende filmscène naar keuze. Ik koos de auto-achtervolgingsscène uit de misdaadfilm Ronin, omdat ik erg houd van de actie en hectiek van zo'n car chase, een hectiek die ik ook graag opzoek in mijn muziek. Tegelijk wilde ik hommage brengen aan het soort filmmuziek zoals die in de jaren '70 vaak onder spannende scènes gezet werd, met name in misdaadfilms en thrillers (denk hierbij ook aan tv-films en 'sleazy' Europese films zoals de Italiaanse poliziottesco): muziek vol ritmische energie, groove, jazzy klanken en veel octotoniek en kleine tertsen. Die elementen zijn duidelijk terug te horen in het stuk, hoewel ik het stuk zeker niet als filmmuziek zie, maar als een op zichzelf staand stuk dat gáát over een specifiek soort filmmuziek. De achtervolging in het stuk eindigt met het geluid van een autoclaxon, uitvergroot in het koper.
