Petenera's Night Music / Beijer, Thomas
Description:
Petenera's Night Music is inspired by an old Spanish gypsy-legend about a cantadora (female singer) called Petenera, who is abandoned by her lover. In her grief, she curses all men in the world. As in many gypsy-stories, there are strong connotations with mystery and black magic.
'Petenera' is also the name for a musical form (palo in Spanish) in the flamenco. However, the Spanish do not dance on it - according to tradition, this will bring misfortune...
As a motto for this nocturne for piano, I chose the following strophes from a poem by the great Spanish poet Federico García Lorca, to whose memory the piece is dedicated.
