composition
Heterophonic : for orchestra / Evrim Demirel, 2006
Description:
Program note (English): As the title suggests, the piece is based on the idea of heterophony. The elaborated embellishments on the sophisticated melodic structures apply to the whole orchestra. Music evolves in a linear concept, within the harmonic interruptions. Each individual line folllows a melodic route and sounds in unison, octaves or double octaves at certain structural points. The simultaneity of different tracks does not follow the Western system of organized chord progressions; hence its fundamental organization is mainly horizontal. The large rhythmic patterns, termed 'usul' in Turkish music, are abstracted and scattered out during the course of the piece played by timpani. Rhythmic features, timbre characterisctics, microtonal substance and the heterophonic peculiarity of classical Ottoman music have been unified in a symphonic piece. This work as a whole represents Demirel's interpretation of imaginary contemporary Ottoman music of today, which does not exist.
