composition
365 : for orchestra, 2006 / Joey Roukens
Description:
365 can be listened to as a continuous musical stream, which – over the course of exactly 365 measures – takes on very different guises, eventually ending exactly at the point where the piece started (not unlike a year cycle of 365 days). In the piece I have tried to connect highly diverse stilistic references and gestures within a single quasi-symphonic architecture as organically as possible: from ethereal, impressionist-like textures to an almost Mahlerian rhetoric to minimalist passages with references to pop and jazz. In doing so, the music is sometimes consciously taken to the edge of kitsch and syrupy tonal harmonies and (what the old avant-garde considers) banal means of expression are not avoided.
