Falling Down : for clarinet, violoncello and piano, 2003 / Giel Vleggaar
Description:
Program note (English): Like many of his pieces Falling Down represents a slice of personal experience. Certainly not an unfamiliar one either: stumbling, falling, getting back up, brushing the dust off and looking around again. Vleggaar also wants to show the baffling nature of such blunders and the simultaneous frustration and comfort of the cycle. He describes a runner who discovers after many obstacles that he's still at the beginning of the race, but this time has a greater overview of the situation. After many detours nothing is what it was, and the same starting line takes on a completely different appearance. Written for Laura Carmichael's Trio Chiffre, the strength and sensitivity of the clarinet/cello/piano combination lend itself to this internal contemplation. - Teresa Hron
