Description:
Program note (English): In 1993 the director of a big insurance company, Anthony Boersma, a well-known music maecenas and a violinist in his free time, asked John Borstlap to write a horn trio with the intention to play it himself with two friends who completed the formation. Just in that time Borstlap was involved in developing a more classical idiom and an orchestral style which freely re-interprets classical tonalities and structures. This exploration took the form of many sketches of orchestral textures, which were used and 'pruned' for Boersma's horn trio. In its chamber music form - finished in 1994 - Capriccio has been welcomed by musicians and audiences alike for its engaging, romantic and expressive character; a CD recording with Vesko Eshkenazy (vl), Jacob Slagter (hrn) and Alwin Bär (pf) for Albany Records in 1997 further spread the piece. But in 2002 Borstlap eventually found the time to realise his original intention and worked-out an orchestral version of the piece, in which the original richness of the textures and their polyphony get more space, and which offers ample opportunity for a modern symphony orchestra to demonstrate its warmth and euphonious harmony. The first movement, Allegro moderato, is a free adaptation of classical sonata form and ends in an almost euphoric 'major mood'. The second movement, Intermezzo: tranquillo, is a short, introvert meditation, forming a bridge to the third and last movement Andante con moto which is a theme followed by free variations. In this last movement, the rather slow tempo gradually changes in a fast scherzo which is followed by a quiet rounding-off. Capriccio is Borstlap's first work which openly uses classical tonality and forms, in a successful attempt to iron-out as much as possible any remnants of 20C modernism. This 'revivalist' aspect of the piece was much ahead of its time, given comparable trends in the (still young) 21st century, especially in the USA. It thus creates a bridge between contemporary music and traditional performance culture, in line with the artistic programme of Composers Group Amsterdam (which Borstlap set-up in 2002 with two collegues) which endorses the 'renewal of cultural traditions'. Capriccio shows that it is still possible to write in a classical idiom and yet create a personal style and character. The orchestral version of Capriccio is dedicated to the memory of the brilliant pianist Alwin Bär, who brought to the piece a profound understanding in performances and on the above-mentioned CD recording. - JOHN BORSTLAP
