Description:
Program note (English): In the beginning of the 14th century a nun, Sybillia from Verlais, allowed herself to be bricked up within the walls of the convent, where she remained enclosed in an eight-square metre space for the next 38 years, in order to affirm of her love for God. While confined there she suffered terrifying hallucinations, brought on by her anorexic condition, causing her to enter the state of permanent ecstacy. Having started out as 'a bride of Christ', she began increasingly to pontificate about Satan, up to the point where the diabolic filth was so great that (following a trial) she was condemned to be burned at the stake. The text in Speculum inversum is based on the pronouncements she made during that trial. - MARTIJN PADDING
