Description:
Program note (English): I composed my second string quartet between 1996 and 1998. Six years later Stefan Metz commissioned me to compose another string quartet for the Orlando Festival 2005. Even though the music from the classical tradition is of little or no influence in my oeuvre, the string quartets are an exception to this. I like the medium of a string quartet and I like the tradition it results from. And I see the string quartets as a series. That's why one can find some links between my second and third string quartet. My second is more or less based on the Beethoven model and it has winks towards some great works from the classical repertoire, like Beethoven's 5th and 9th Symphonies. The third has some winks towards three masterworks from the 20th century orchestral repertoire. These are Copland's 3rd Symphony, Berg's Violin Concerto and MacMillan's The confession of Isobel Gowdie. - MARIJN SIMONS
