Mehfil : for piano, 2004 / Rokus de Groot
Description:
Program note (English): Mehfil is a word in Persian and Urdu (a North-Indian language) referring to a meeting of friends, musicians, poets or lovers at a private house. As the Iranian composer Alireza Mashayekhi puts it, mehfil is like Plato's Symposion. In this composition the North-Indian râga Chandrakauns meets European pianistic traditions. It is a homage to Zia Mohinuddin Dagar, master of the rudraveena, whose rendering of Chadrakauns was one of the first encounters I had with Indian classical music. The composition is also a homage to Claude Debussy of the Préludes. The piece is a homage to Wasifuddin Dagar as well, the dhrupad singer who guided me into the depth of North Indian music, always playing the tanpura, wether singing or speaking, in Dehli and Amsterdam, during many mehfils. - ROKUS DE GROOT
