Description:
Program note (English): Sinfonia de uma noite inquieta is based on a text from The Book of Disquiet by Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935). It is a typical Portuguese ode to sleep, to an inactive world. Or as Pessoa expresses it: 'every action destroys a dream'. In the text a vision is called of extraterrestrial greatness. But eventually there is nothing left but the complaint that it remains a sin not to have slept. This piece arose during a stay in Lisbon, where I began composing with the language and the culture of Portugal in my mind. For this concise 'choral symphony' my plan was to convey the melancholy of a Portuguese fado without the composition being a true fado. - JOOST KLEPPE
