Malpaís con campanas : for large orchestra, 1997-2000, revision 2005 / Gustavo A. Trujillo

(Composer)
Description:
Program note (English): Malpaís con Campanas is based on a childhood remembrance, a landscape in Las Manchas (La Palma, Canary Islands): a still fresh lava stream surrounding a small, white spared chapel, whose bells are ringing in the desolated silence. The painful sound of the bells, with all its ritual connotations, defies the violent, powerful volcanic nature.
The ringing of the bells is an inseparable part of the popular culture of the Canary Islands. Its sound, full of meanings and nuances, remains a witness of past times, when bells were, in the vast malpaís, the announcers of life and death.
In Malpaís con Campanas six different bell-rings are used.
The ringing of the bells is like fresh lava streaming down the mountain. It fills every thing with its unbearable, unmistakable sound and suddenly dies away on coming to the sea. Behind remains only the silence, the malpaís waiting to be covered with new bell sounds, the bells hoping to survive the malpaís. - GUSTAVO A. TRUJILLO
