Description:
Program note (English): This composition consists of three contrasted movements. The central movement's main priority is neither melody nor rhythm, but rather the presentation of different tone colors, something that the Müller organ in the St. Bavo (Haarlem) can accomplish with beautiful results. Despite the contrasts between movements, there is also a kind of coherence among them, which explains the title, Trifid. This term originates in biology and means 'a tripartite construction. ' In general, my instrumental music does not originate from extramusical sources of inspiration. In Nabokov's novel The eye, he has one of this characters say: 'Music, at least good music, expresses that which cannot be expressed in words. That is the meaning and mystery of music.' My thoughts run that way as well, so I think that it is pretty much impossible to provide any kind of explanation for the inner content of my music. The music sounds the way it sounds, and that's for the listener to deal with. - WIM DE RUITER
