Lucas Wiegerink (Amsterdam, 1985) is a multi-facetted composer who draws inspiration from fine art, literature, history and science. Influences including early music, jazz and world music are apparent in his compositions, and he often integrates electronics into his works. Wiegerink harbours a great love of music-theatre, in which he strives to fully intertwine each of the different disciplines with each other.
Wiegerink's music has been performed at festivals at home and abroad, by ensembles such as the Nieuw Ensemble, the Dutch Chamber Choir, the Dutch Student Chamber Orchestra, the Ricciotti Ensemble, Orkest De Ereprijs and The Choir of the Cathedral Church of St John the Divine in New York City. The renowned master pianist Severin von Eckardstein has also performed one of his works. He wrote the music-theatre work Being Arthur (2014) and the chamber opera Ik Vertrek (2015) for the Kameroperahuis and the Dutch Touring Opera.
Wiegerink studied composition at the Amsterdam Conservatory with Richard Ayres and Willem Jeths, at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague with Martijn Padding and Louis Andriessen, and at the Manhattan School of Music in New York with Susan Botti. He has won prizes at competitions including the Princes Christina Composers Competition and the Henriƫtte Bosmans Competition, and the Volkskrant newspaper crowned him an 'outstanding talent'. In season 2014-15, Wiegerink was the Young Composer in the Spotlights at Musis Sacrum in Arnhem. Next to his activities as a composer, Wiegerink is also the conductor of De Plaats Music-Theatre Choir.
