Rosy Wertheim was born on February 19, 1888 in Amsterdam and she died on May 27, 1949 in Laren.
After receiving a piano certificate from the Dutch Musicians' Society, she studied harmony and counterpoint with Bernard Zweers and Sem Dresden at the Muzieklyceum in Amsterdam. In Paris she studied composition with Louis Aubert and in Vienna with Karl Weigl.
In the 1920’s, she taught solfège en piano at the Muzieklyceum in Amsterdam. She was also conductor of a number of children's and women’s choirs, including the choir of the Religious Socialist Union. In 1929 she moved to Paris for six months but eventually stayed for six years and became friends with Elsa Barraine. Her home was a meeting point for composers including Ibert, Jolivet, Honegger, Milhaud and Messiaen. Thereafter she journeyed to Vienna (1935) and New York (1936) and resettled in the Netherlands in 1937. Following World War II, a period in which she was forced into hiding, she fell ill and never composed again. Until her death she taught at the music school in Laren.
She became well-known with the art song 'Neutraal' (1914) on a text by François Pauwels. Up to 1929 she composed mainly art songs and choral works. Her years in Paris were the most productive ones in that period she wrote 'Quatuor à cordes' (1933). Her compositions show influences of van Franck, Debussy, Ravel en Stravinsky. 'Trois Morceaux' (1939), for flute and piano, is written in a more sober and harmonically modern language.

Rosaly Marie (Rosy) Wertheim is op 19 februari 1888 in Amsterdam geboren. Zij is een kleindochter van de bekende Amsterdams bankier Abraham Wertheimer. Haar ouders sturen haar naar kostschool in het Franse Neuilly waar haar belangstelling wordt gewekt voor klassieke muziek. Zij krijgt er pianolessen en als ze terug is in Nederland studeert ze piano bij Ulfert Schults.

Rosy Wertheim behaalt het staatsexamen piano en het diploma van de Nederlandse Toonkunstenaars Vereniging. Vervolgens studeert ze aan het Amsterdamsch Conservatorium harmonie en contrapunt bij Bernard Zweers en Sem Dresden. Daarnaast geeft ze solfège en pianoles aan het Muzieklyceum en dirigeert een aantal kinder- en vrouwenkoren, waaronder dat van het Religieus Socialistisch Verbond.

Rosy Wertheim vertrekt voor zes maanden naar Parijs, waar ze uiteindelijk zes jaar blijft. Zij componeert veel, krijgt compositielessen van Louis Aubert en schrijft voor het dagblad 'Het Volk' over het muziekleven in Parijs. Haar woning is een ontmoetingsplaats voor componisten als Jacques Ibert, André Jolivet, Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud, Olivier Messiaen en Elsa Barraine.

Rosy Wertheim verblijft een jaar in Wenen waar ze contrapunt studeert bij Karl Weigl. Daarna gaat ze naar New York, waar haar strijkkwartet 'Quatuor à cordes' (1933), het 'Divertimento' voor kamerorkest (1934) en enkele van haar pianowerken worden uitgevoerd. Een jaar later keert Rosy Wertheim terug naar Amsterdam

In Den Haag gaat het 'Concerto per pianoforte e orchestra' (1939) in première met het Residentie Orkest onder leiding van Willem van Otterloo. Rosy Wertheim organiseert in de kelder van haar huis concerten. Op het programma staan werken van Joodse componisten. In 1942 moet ze onderduiken in Amstelveen en het Gooi. Als een van de weinigen van haar familie overleeft zij de oorlog.

Na de oorlog is Rosy Wertheim lerares op de muziekschool van Laren. Ze wordt ernstig ziek en kan niet meer componeren. Op 27 mei 1949 overlijdt Rosy Wertheim in Laren.
